Course overview

Installers, install components of large-scale industrial and commercial systems such as heating, chilled water, hot water and cold water which are used for heating workplaces such as those found in industrial and commercial buildings like office blocks, factories, schools and hospitals. This level 2 Installer qualification helps to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours apprentices need to install components of large-scale industrial and commercial systems under close but not constant supervision.

Entry Requirements


You will need to achieve Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths (unless equivalent GCSE’s are already held) English L2 – GCSE C/4 Maths L2 – GCSE C/4

You will also need  to achieve ICT 1.

Apprentices will need to have achieved these before they take the end point assessment, they are not a requirement to gain entry to the course.

How much does it cost?


The full training cost for a Building Services Engineering – Service Maintenance Engineer Apprenticeship is £12,000, however as an apprentice you will not be required to pay anything towards your apprenticeship other than any travel costs you may incur getting to and from your employer’s workplace.

For employers there is no cost for hiring an apprentice aged 16 to 18 years.  If you recruit an apprentice aged 19 or over then the costs are 5 per cent of the full cost of the apprenticeship (e.g. £600 over 4 years).

For apprentice wages, JTL recommend that employers follow the JIB pay rates.

Course Details

Apprentices will complete the City & Guilds level 2 Heating and Ventilating Installer qualification to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours they need to install components of large-scale industrial and commercial systems under close but not constant supervision.

Years 1-2
  • Understand health and safety requirements within the building services engineering industry.
  • Understand how scientific principles are applied in heating and ventilation systems.
  • Communicate with others within building services engineering.
  • Understand industrial and commercial hot water systems installations.
  • Understand industrial and commercial cold water systems installations.
  • Understand industrial and commercial hot water heating systems installations.
  • Understand industrial and commercial chilled water systems installations.
  • Preparation and fabrication of heating and ventilation pipework systems.
  • Understanding testing, charging and decommissioning of heating and ventilation pipework systems.

Delivery & Assessment

  • Delivered via day release over an academic calendar year, some regions may offer block release, you would need to check with your JTL Training Officer.
  • The End Point Assessment (EPA) is expected to take place in the final 3 months of the apprenticeship.
  • Apprentices must pass this to complete their apprenticeship and become a fully qualified Installer
  • The EPA consists of a knowledge test and an installer skills test
  • Grades of pass, merit and distinction are available
