Incentive grant payment for employers (England only)

Available funding for apprentices hired between 1 October 2021 and 31 January 2022 – £3,000

The Government announced that employers can claim the £3,000 incentive grant for apprentices hired between 1 October 2022 and 31 January 2022.

For an apprentice of any age, employers can claim the £3,000 to put towards their training, their salary, or equipment.

This is in addition to the existing £1,000 payment for all new 16-18-year-old apprentices (and those aged under 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan, where applicable). This means that an employer of a 16-18-year-old will receive £4,000. The existing £1,000 is a separate payment to the £3,000 incentive payment.

Eligible employers can make a claim via the Apprenticeship Service (TAS) between 11 January 2022 and 15 May 2022.

To be eligible for the payment, employers must:

  • Make the claim themselves via TAS, JTL cannot do this for you
  • Reserve funding on TAS
  • Hire a new apprentice with a contract of employment start date between 1 October 2021 and 31 January 2022
  • Your apprentice must have an apprenticeship training start date between 1 October 2021 and 31 March 2022
  • To receive full payment, the apprenticeship must last at least one year

Reserving apprenticeship funds

It is essential that employers reserve funds via TAS before training begins. If you are looking at taking on an apprentice in September, you can get a head start and reserve your funding now.

When making a reservation the following details will be required:

  • the month the apprenticeship training will start
  • the apprenticeship standard.

Watch the below ESFA guidance video on reserving apprenticeship funds.

The Apprenticeship Service (TAS)

It is the responsibility of you, the employer, to claim the grant via TAS. JTL cannot do it for you; however, we are on hand to support and guide you through the process where possible.

You are required to register for TAS and reserve your funding prior to making the claim for the grant, if this is not done then the claim cannot be made. Once this has been done and your apprentice is live on TAS you can make the claim, you do not need to wait until your apprentice is live on the JTL funding system to apply.

*Please note that payment will not be paid until the funded paperwork is processed and reported to the Apprenticeship Service (ESFA).

Watch the below ESFA guidance video on how to claim for an apprentice via TAS or click here to view and download JTL’s guidance document.

Further information on TAS can also be found on the Government website.

When you’ll get paid

Once the funded paperwork is processed and reported to the Apprenticeship Service (ESFA), payment is made in two equal instalments for each apprentice. The first payment is due after an apprentice completes 90 days of their apprenticeship, the second is due after 365 days. Your organisation and finance details will need to be verified before payment is made which could take up to 80 days.

Payment will be made via Bacs on the 14th working day of the month. It usually takes three working days to process. To reflect that where you apply for an incentive payment in the same month as being eligible to be paid an instalment, you must apply by the 15th day of the month. Where you claim after this date, payment of your instalment will be delayed by a month to allow for necessary payment checks.

After you apply, you can view applications, estimated payment dates, and check the status of each payment in your apprenticeship service account.
