On this International Women’s Day 2025, we proudly celebrate the incredible women who are breaking barriers and making their mark in traditionally male-dominated industries like electrical and plumbing. These women are not just learning the ropes – they’re proving that determination, skill, and passion have no gender.
Research from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) shows that women are not encouraged to think about STEM careers in school and many women are put off by how male dominated the industry is. Encouragingly though, there is growing demand for diversity in the building services engineering sector. JTL works closely with industry leaders such as The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership, Electrical Contractors Association (ECA), Joint Industry Board (JIB), NICEIC and others to do more to increase female representation in the industries we work in.
JTL is proud to support and mentor our female apprentices as they embark on their career journeys. Every day, they inspire us with their resilience, work ethic, and commitment. Their presence in the trades is vital to the growth and innovation of these industries.
We are featured in his month’s Electrotechnical News magazine in a feature spotlighting the inspiring women who are already lighting the way, including insights from our very own JTL electrical apprentice, Lucy Copley and Operations Director, Clair Bradley.
Lucy Copley, a first-year electrical apprentice at JTL South Yorkshire, said:
“I think there
‘s a real misconception that a career as an electrician is just for men and we should do more to dispel that myth – it couldn’t be more wrong.
In my apprenticeship with JTL I am challenged every day, doing something different every day, and proud to be working in a fast-paced industry making a positive impact.
The sector needs more of us, so I’d encourage anyone considering a career in the trades to make the leap, no matter what stage of your career you are at.”
Clair Bradley, Operations Director with JTL, said:
“Despite some progress in recent years we still don’t see enough women in the skilled trades. A diverse and inclusive workforce is important not only to fill the chronic skills shortage that we face in building services engineering, but also to support our society and economy.
“Our female apprentices at JTL are brilliant examples of how a career in the industry supports people of all ages, genders and abilities and its a pleasure to see them progressing in highly skilled, well-paid jobs.
“It is a cross-industry effort to encourage more females to embark on a career in STEM and we continue to work with schools, trade bodies, governments and our employer partners to drive change.”
