This Net Zero Week, we’ve been talking to colleagues about how they’ve been investing time in building their green skills.
Here, Employee Development Technical Specialist Ali Bullough tells us about additional training she’s completed, and her view on the opportunities presented by the move to net zero.

“Back in 2021, I completed training on Electric Vehicle (EV) charging installation so that JTL could offer this commercially and as part of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for our own colleagues. It was face-to-face training and some online, too – I really enjoyed it and learned a lot from both.
“Off the back of this CPD, I was then able to help develop an EV charging course that JTL could offer. Following successful piloting, the full course is now delivered by Develop, and covers all the key skills to install, fault find and inspect & test EV charging points.
“For those taking the course, successful completion will help them to become an Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) authorised installer, showing their professional commitment to safety and low carbon. For employers, it’s also a useful way to tap into a rapidly expanding market and to keep their staff current and motivated with more capabilities.
“It’s been really interesting to watch the evolution of EV charging and how much easier it’s become compared to a few years ago, as well as advancements across the board in smart energy. There’s a significant focus on solar PV and battery storage, for example. We’ve always guided our apprentices to be mindful of energy and cost efficiency, but the ongoing advances in tech can make this increasingly easier for installers and consumers.
“These advancements in smart buildings and energy management represent more opportunity and career paths for installers, and it’s definite progress towards net zero. That progress is something that JTL plays an important part in, so it’s rewarding to know I’m contributing to that aim when I turn up for work every day. Our work ultimately feeds into carbon reductions that will contribute to the UK’s net zero target, but crucially the changes in industry also open even more exciting career opportunities for JTL’s apprentices. It’s really rewarding to see.
“One of the key points of JTL’s current strategy is how we deliver what industry needs for net zero and beyond. We’re not just keeping pace; we’re working to lead the way in meeting these needs. I’m one of many who’s keen to grow my own green skills and encourage my colleagues to do the same. JTL’s core purpose is quality training, and we live and breathe it right through the organisation so that the people delivering new skills are well-equipped to stay one step ahead.”
