If you’ve been working as an electrician for years but never completed a formal apprenticeship, the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) offers a route to gain your Level 3 qualification and industry recognition.
The City & Guilds 2346 Experienced Worker Assessment is designed for electricians with real, on-the-job experience—giving you the opportunity to prove your competence and achieve the qualification you deserve.
What Does It Cover?
This pathway is ideal if you:
- Have at least 5 years’ experience working as an Installation or Maintenance Electrician
- Hold a relevant Level 2 electrical qualification
- Are currently working across a wide range of electrical installation tasks
- Never completed an apprenticeship or equivalent Level 3 qualification
- Have qualifications from outside the UK that are not formally recognised
If you don’t currently hold a Level 2 qualification but have built up strong technical knowledge and experience over many years, you may still be eligible through an entry assessment route.

What Is the Experienced Worker Assessment?
The Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) is not a training course—it’s a structured assessment process that allows you to demonstrate your existing skills and knowledge.
You’ll build a portfolio of evidence based on real work you carry out, covering the full scope of industry standards. This includes:
- Installation work
- Inspection & testing
- Fault finding
- Health & safety practices
- Compliance with current regulations
The process must be completed within 18 months, so it’s important that you’re actively working and able to provide evidence throughout.
What Qualification Will You Achieve?
On successful completion, you will achieve:
- A Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification (2346 route)
- Eligibility to take the end assessment to complete the process leading to EAS and ECD recognition
- If both qualifications are complete then you will be able to apply for the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme Gold Card
This is widely recognised as the industry benchmark and is equivalent to completing a full apprenticeship.

You’ll receive guidance on how to gather evidence from your day-to-day work. - Workplace Evidence Collection
Build your portfolio while continuing to work on-site. - Assessment & Review
Your assessor reviews your evidence and supports you through any gaps. - Final Assessment (AM2E)
Complete the practical assessment to demonstrate full occupational competence.
