With three new options available to apprentices from this summer, significant changes have been made to the Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician apprenticeship standard.
The revised apprenticeship standard is due to launch in June 2024 and will provide greater flexibility to cater to the evolving needs of the plumbing and heating sector, as well as tailored routes into industry for apprentices.
Three specialised pathways to success
After completing the core plumbing programme, the revised standard offers individuals three routes to professional development to choose from, allowing them to tailor their apprenticeship training to specific career goals:
- Gas: Apprentices can hone their skills to join the Gas Safe Register, the accreditation required for working with gas appliances in domestic settings.
- Environmental technologies: Alternatively, the environmental technologies pathway focuses on installing and maintaining solar thermal systems and air source heat pumps. Upon completion, individuals can qualify for the Competent Persons Scheme and Microgeneration Scheme, opening doors to exciting opportunities in the green energy sector.
- Non-domestic plumbing: This brand-new pathway caters to the specific requirements of non-domestic buildings such as schools, high rise buildings, hospitals and health care settings. Apprentices will develop expertise in installing and maintaining plumbing systems, such as washrooms and extensive above-ground drainage systems.
Reflecting the growth of the industry
The changes have been approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) in collaboration with an employers’ group formed of sole traders and large businesses in the industry.
To reflect the industry’s growing focus on renewable energy sources, the revised standard allows individuals to learn more about emerging technologies and overcome challenges that come with net zero targets, while still having the knowledge to maintain existing plumbing and heating systems.
This will futureproof the next generation of plumbing and heating professionals by aligning training with the latest industry trends and equipping learners with the most in-demand skills to build a fulfilling career.
What to expect next
JTL is working hard alongside awarding bodies on refining the plumbing and heating qualifications and assessments for this revised apprenticeship. All apprenticeships commencing in the 2024/25 academic year will be under the new structure following these standard changes.
